Electric Trim STC (SA01746SE) Issued PDF Print E-mail

April 4, 2007

Simuflight has just been issued the STC (SA01746SE) for the replacement electric trim system for the Seabee.  This system is the culmination of three years of work and countless hours of flight testing with our test pilot and the FAA people as well.  This is a significant upgrade to the existing system as well as adding electric trim for the rudder.

This system completely replaces the current trim hardware so you remove all the gears, cables, chains, cranks etc.  We replace all of this with two servo motors in for the elevator and we add a servo motor to the rudder for the rudder trim.

The advantages are:

  • Reduced maintenance of a problematic system.
  • Improved weight and balance, the new system is significantly lighter than the old system and this is aft where the Seabee really needs it.
  • Improved flight handling, the system allows for a hat switch on the yoke (Ken can even add one to a original Seabee yoke) as an option.
  • Rudder trim, never before available.
This system is a minimum maintenance system it either works or it doesn't had the servo motors are not expensive to replace should there be a problem.

The FAA put us through our paces on flight test with regards to handling in all conditions.  We had to test trim runaways and controllability at all airspeeds and flight conditions.  The FAA's test pilot's comment when he came back from the final flight test "very nice modification, I see no issues in any flight configuration".

This kit is in the process of being added to our PMA and should be available for shipping by late summer.  We are currently taking orders for this kit and will be shipping as soon as the FAA completes the PMA side of the paperwork.

Help Extend or Eliminate Hartzell AD97-18-2

Henry Ruzakowski and and Brian VanWagnen  are compiling data on the results of inspections on Hartzell X, V series propellers, in order to petition the FAA to provide relief on the repetitive inspection requirements.  Brian has met with the FAA and was told that if he could provide data that shows that these propellers were holding up well during the repetitive inspections, they would increase the interval between repetitive inspections. Please download and fill out the form they have provided, and mail a paper copy of it, along with copies of yellow tags & invoices you may have to the address provided on the form.  Brian will be collecting the data and sending it to the FAA in written form.

You may contact Brian VanWagnen with any questions at (517) 764-4193, or e-mail.
